When I was 16 years old I landed a job at G. Fox & Co. as back to school help. This meant that I would be let go at the end of the summer. No way was that happening to me. I worked harder than everyone else and when they were terminated I stayed on …and on. All through my junior and senior year of high school and even into my 1st year of college. The 20% discount on all my purchases made me an ace in math. And the money I saved went to purchase my first car, a 1976 Toyota Corolla for $1900!
My first job at age 15 was actually in a library as a page — i really enjoyed being able to browse the stacks as I was re-shelving. But my most interesting job (when I was few years older than Marcelo) was probably the summer I worked at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. Getting to play on the grass courts was a great perk!
I worked in the Housewares Department of Sears at age 16. It was one of the first real eye-openers for me in realizing that the world is full of the most curious people from all walks of life. (not to mention the craziest kitchen gadgets I’d ever seen!) The best part of the job was meeting my future husband only two isles away in the Hardware Department. We are still together (I got a real Sears Die-Hard!)
